It is arguably easier to spot a kingfisher inn sign than it is to see the actual bird - I'm not a twitcher but I've only managed to see a kingfisher a couple of times. However, it is exciting when you do catch sight of one as their bright blue and orange feathers flash past when they hunt fish over shallow rivers. Occasionally they will hover above the water’s surface and, if you're really lucky as I was once at The Leasowes in Halesowen, it will sit on a branch for a good five minutes allowing you to have a good ogle. The Kingfisher is easier to find in central and southern England but, as our climate becomes a little warmer, they are starting to drift further north. The first sign here can be found in Oscott, an area between Birmingham and Walsall. The second sign used to hang on The Kingfisher at Preston in Rutland though not long after I took this photograph the pub was acquired by the Grainstore Brewery of nearby Oakham.
