Some history of the [Malt] Shovel Inn at Lye

Originally called the Malt Shovel Inn, this pub fronts Pedmore Road and is a few yards down from the junction with Cemetery Road so that it is in the triangle created by Green Lane. Shown on a map dated 1699, Cemetery Road is an ancient route that went up the hill through Careless Green to Oldnall.

"I once said, 'We will bury you,' and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you."
