Some history of Church Road

Church Road was a short stretch of road leading in a north-easterly direction from Nechells towards the parish church. I type in the past tense because, although it is still there, it is completely unrecognisable from the old Church Road that featured shops and housing. In the 21st century the thoroughfare is lined with factory units that would have aesthetes reaching for a sick bucket. Oh, and there is also a horrible big traffic roundabout were a community once lived. At times you have to wonder about the very word "Progress." Church Road once started at the junction with Thimble Mill Lane and continued until it merged with Church Lane at No.73.

Church Road once started at the junction with Thimble Mill Lane and continued until it merged with Church Lane at No.73. The above image is courtesy of Lyn Harrington who inherited a lovely collection of Aston slides. It is not a street that was well documented in film so this is an important image that recorded the housing along Church Road. The children animate the scene in a charming way.

More information on Church Road to follow. I probably created the page as I had a link to Church Road from another page. When building the site it is easier to place links as they crop up rather than go back later on. I realise this is frustrating if you were specifically looking for information on Church Road. There is information on Birmingham dotted around the website - click here for a suitable starting place. There is also a general page for Aston.
