Photographs, Negatives, Slides and Plates of Fashion.
A collection of images showing clothing fashions over the years. I would be hopeless at describing the style and fabrics so I have been kindly assisted by C.J. as special fashion correspondent.
Five women are swinging a leg in the swinging 60s during this photo shoot at Blackpool. The famous tower formed a backdrop to an image encapsulating the spirit of the times. C. J. says : "This fabulous photograph shows a group of models wearing the many styles worn in the 60s ranging from a simple button-through blouse with trousers, a brocade coat, diamond check coat with close-fitting hat, Empire-line pinafore dress with detail, and finally a knee-length trouser suit. Black tights and low-heeled or flat footwear complete the look, all of which would be suitable for a theatre visit, a day at the races or even a wedding."
This photograph was part of a set of images that appear to show the annual dinner of the Benham Athletic Club which I think was based in Dulwich. C. J. says : "This photograph shows the wonderful fashion of the 1950s. Gorgeous dresses made of fabrics ranging from heavily-patterned brocade, to frothy chiffons and taffeta. Superbly feminine and elegant. Very pretty high-heeled strappy sandals are worn by all of these "Bevvy Of Beauties" who I notice, are carrying fans. One of the ladies is the only one wearing white shoes, not sandals, and is also sporting a rose on the bodice."
I am guessing at around 1950 for this photograph that originated in the United States. C. J. says : "This young lady looks lovely in a polka-dot dress of Organza which is not only a glamorous fabric but, being fairly stiff, is ideal for the pleated stand-up collar. Pearl accessories, a wide, soft cummerbund tied at the back into a large bow, and hair held loosely in a ribbon adds to the total femininity of this beautiful photograph."
I have put c.1950 on the photograph but it could be a little earlier. C. J. says : "A stunning photograph, possibly late 1940s showing our glamorous subject wearing a beautiful Tulle, off-the-shoulder dress with a velvet bow which is secured at the front of waist with a silk flower. Hair that is swept-up with a decorative slide, and necklace are all that is needed to complete this wonderfully elegant look."
This early to mid-1950s image is either a fashion shoot or the women are part of a musical quintet. I just don't know. C. J. says : "I would hazard a guess that this group of five ladies are possibly singers in a group, as they are all wearing matching dresses with off-the-shoulder lace bodice extending over the waistline into lovely, frothy full skirts. Their beautiful hair styles are so feminine and very reminiscent of the late 1940s and early 1950s."
Although I have marked this image as mid-1930s, I suspect it is later, possibly in the 1940s. Two women are walking along a boardwalk in the United States. An advertisement for Chevrolet can be seen in the background. They could be strolling at Atlantic City but I am not sure of the location. C. J. says : "This photograph shows that even a visit to the seaside gives an excuse for dressing up. One lady is wearing a polka-dot dress with plain white collar, matching hat, and peep-toe shoes, whilst the other lady is in a cotton "Airtex" dress, hat, sandals and, of course, always the gloves and handbags. No jogging bottoms or trainers for these lovely ladies!"
