Photographs of the wedding of Frederick Dennis Beaken and Betty M. Lane at Clapton in London 1959
This page features the wedding of Frederick Dennis J. Beaken and Betty M. Lane which took place in May 1959 at Clapton Park Congregational Chapel. In this photograph the couple are leaving the chapel immediately after the ceremony. They are being followed by four bridesmaids.
The groom, Frederick Dennis J. Beaken, better known as Freddie, was baptised in January 1927. He was the son of Frederick Joseph Beaken and Johanna Frances Wicking. I think his father worked as a joiner at the time of the wedding, with Freddie being recorded at 89 Elderfield Road in Lower Clapton. His grandfather, a Boer War veteran, had been a policeman.
Betty Lane was the daughter of a haberdasher. In 1964 the married couple lived in Burchall Road at Lea Bridge. At the end of the 20th century Freddie was living at Woodford Green in Essex.
The bride, Betty M. Lane, arrives at Clapham Park Congregational Chapel with her father. C. J. says : "the bride is wearing a beautiful full-length Dress with bodice and sleeves covered in lace, which continues to the rear and sides of the dress and features a very pretty scalloped neckline."
Betty Lane makes that awkward climb up the steps to Clapham Park Congregational Chapel. With a long dress, it was one of those moments that required a good deal of concentration to avoid a disaster. Lots of women have stopped their shopping activity to catch a glimpse of the bride from the gateway.
The bridesmaids to Betty Lane line up for a group photograph outside Clapham Park Congregational Chapel. C. J. says : "Two of the four bridesmaids are in cap-sleeved dresses with "Halo"-style head-dresses, wrist-length gloves and carrying a posy. The two bridesmaids in centre of the photograph are wearing dresses covered in lace, floral head-dresses, three-quarter-length gloves and carrying bouquets."

An informal photograph amid the guests at the wedding of Frederick Beaken and Betty Lane outside Clapham Park Congregational Chapel. I like these informal shots that afford a snapshot moment at weddings. The woman in the wool dress has a deadpan face but has seemingly just made a remark that amused the other older woman. Was she bitching off the woman walking away from the camera in a glamorous dress?
