In capturing this image, the photographer would have been stood at the end of Broad Street looking towards these offices and retail outlets on Easy Row. The large building behind was the Mason College of Science.
The building on the extreme left is the former Birmingham and Midland Homeopathic Hospital. At the time of this photograph, H. H. Graham was the Treasurer, Miss Olive Furneaux the Secretary and Miss A. E. Wimblett the Matron. Homoeopathy was first introduced into Birmingham in 1845, and there was once a Homeopathic Dispensary in The Old Square.
Immediately adjoining the hospital is the premises of W. Gerwin Limited. Located at No.12 Easy Row was the National Time Recorder Company Limited. Many a factory worker would have clocked in using a device manufactured by this company.
Next door at No.11 are the offices of Thomson & Chavasse, along with Joseph Shore & Son Ltd., both of whom were wine and spirit merchants. The latter was one of Birmingham's older firms. Established in 1802, the business was recorded in an 1808 Trade Directory No.3 Easy Row. By 1833 the business is listed at 11 Easy Row, the address they occupied in the year of this image. With the development of this area in the early 1960s the business was forced to move to premises in Broad Street. The firm ceased trading around 1972.
Next to Shore's there is the offices of the solicitors Cottrell & Son, adjoining the accountancy firm of George A. Touche & Co. Just before the junction of Edmund Street is a shop selling "Obsolete Furniture" which today would possibly be called Shabby Chic. One assumes that the firm sold Victorian and Edwardian furnishings which, in the art deco world of the 1930s was probably out of fashion. An emporium in which there would be a bargain to be had.
Paypal is the preferred payment for this site - it is one of the safest online payment methods and allows you to pay with a number of cards. You DO NOT need a Paypal account to pay but perhaps you should consider setting one up - it's free and easy to do so. Why have your credit card details with lots of retailers when you could just have one account that is accepted by many websites. I DO NOT see your credit/debit card details.
Each image is priced on the website and each image has an "add to basket" button. When you press one of these buttons you will be directed to your shopping basket. You can remove items by updating the basket. If you wish to continue viewing images and/or buy further photos you can use the "continue shopping" button to return to the page you were browsing. Please ensure you are selecting the option in the drop-down menu for the image you require. You can always delete items from your basket before you checkout. Once you are finished browsing and shopping simply review your purchases and, if you're ready, checkout.
When you are ready to pay press the "proceed to checkout" button. Paypal account holders simply log in and pay with a click. Paypal generates an invoice for you and a copy is sent to the website when your images will be sent via e-mail with attachments. I like to do it this way as I feel I can provide that little extra customer service with a friendly message and some advice on how to safely store your images on your computer's hard drive or other media.
Your image will be sent to the e-mail address used to pay via Paypal. If you prefer to receive your image via another e-mail address please leave an instruction in the "message to merchant" box on your invoice.
All orders are processed as quickly as possible but the office is not a 24/7 operation. I may be on the road taking photographs, on a cycle ride or even down the pub! I do however like to keep everyone happy and, as such, I generally process orders on the same day. You are a valued customer and are treated as such.
