"On Tuesday a meeting of iron-workers was held at the Boot and Slipper Inn, Rolfe Street, Smethwick, to consider the question of organisation. B. Skidmore presided. Among those present were Councillor Granger, Mr. H. G. Reid, Mr. B. Church [Birmingham], and Mr. J. Capper [operatives' secretary]. The following resolution was adopted: "That this meeting of iron-workers employed in the Smethwick district considers the time has arrived when association should be formed that shall embrace at least the iron-workers of South Staffordshire, Shropshire, and East Worcestershire, and recommend that lodges be formed at all the ironworks in the three counties."
