"A serious accident occurred on Sunday at Leigh to a young man named Benjamin Stephens [17], who shot himself whilst ratting at Mrs. Spencer's. It appears that Stephens was shooting rats in one of the outbuildings, and was called away whilst doing so. He placed his gun behind the corn bin, and must have left it at full cock, for upon his return, in attempting to reach the gun he seized it by the muzzle, and the weapon was immediately discharged, Stephens receiving the full charge in the right arm. He was immediately brought to the Worcester Infirmary, where his arm was at once amputated above the elbow. He is progressing favourably."
